WHAT ARE THE ATTRIBUTES OF GOD?
The Bible tells us what God is like and what He is not like. Without the authority of the Bible, any attempt to explain God’s attributes (essential qualities) would be no better than an opinion, which by itself is often incorrect when it comes to understanding God <JOB 42:7>
*** It is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT to understand who God is***
When we fail to understand Him it causes us to set up, chase after, and worship false gods which is opposite of His will for us as His children <EXODUS 20:3-5>
Now only what God has chosen to reveal to us of Himself is known.
One of His attributes is
Light - this means that He is self-revealing in information of Himself <ISAIAH 60:19 ; JAMES 1:17>
The knowledge God has revealed about Himself should not be neglected or disregarded <HEBREWS 4:1>
Creation, the Bible, & the Word made flesh- Jesus Christ, will help us to know what God is like.
Let’s 1st understand that God is our Creator.
- We are part of His creation <GENESIS 1;1 ; PSALM 24:1>
- We are created in His image. We are above the rest of creation & given dominion (control) over the rest of creation <GENESIS 1:26-28>
- Creation was made marred (less perfect ; damaged; spoiled to a certain extent) by the fall but still offers a glimpse of God’s work <GENESIS 3:17-18; ROMANS 1:19-20>
Considering creation’s vastness, complexity, beauty, & order we can have a sense of the awareness of God.
✨God is eternal, this means He has no beginning & His existence will never end.
He is immortal & infinite <DEUTERONOMY 33:27; PSALM 90:2; 1 TIMOTHY 1:17>
✨ God is immutable, this means He is unchanging. Which means that He is reliable and trustworthy <MALACHI 3:6; NUMBERS 23:19>
✨ God is incomparable; there is No one like Him in works nor being. He is perfect, He is unequaled <2 SAMUEL 7:22; PSALM 86:8; ISAIAH 40:25; MATTHEW 5:48>
✨ God is unfathomable, unsearchable, past finding out as it relates to understanding Him completely.
~ So God would be the 1st to say they think they know me 😆 <ISAIAH 40:28; PSALM 145:3; ROMANS 11:33-34>
✨ God is just.
He is no respecter of persons in the sense of showing favoritism. As His children we all are His favorite <DEUTERONOMY 32:4; PSALM 18:30>
✨ God is omnipotent.
He is all powerful & can do anything that pleases Him. But His actions will always be in accordance with His character. Example: God can do anything, but He can not lie, because it is not His character because God is Truth <REVELATION 19:6; JEREMIAH 32:17 & 27>
✨ God is omnipresent.
He is everywhere at the same time. But this does not mean God is everything. <PSALM 139:7-13; JEREMIAH 23:23>
✨ God is omniscient, this means that He knows everything. Past, present, & future. Including what we are always thinking, even before we think it.
Because He knows everything He is able to administer justice fairly <PSALM 139:1-5; PROVERBS 5:21>
✨ God is 1️⃣. There is No other!
He alone is able to meet your deepest needs and the longings of your heart. God alone is worthy of our worship & devotion <DEUTERONOMY 6:4>
✨ God is righteous. God cannot & will not pass over wrongdoing. Because of God’s righteousness and justice Jesus experienced the wrath when our sins were placed upon Him so that our sins could be forgiven <EXODUS 9:27; MATTHEW 27:45-45; ROMANS 3:21-26>
✨ God is sovereign.
This means God is supreme. All of His creation put together cannot prevent Him from accomplishing His purpose <PSALM 93:1; 95:3; JEREMIAH 23:20>
✨ God is spirit, meaning He is invisible <JOHN 1:18; 4:24>
✨ God is a Trinity. He is 3 in 1. The same substance, equal in power & glory. God is truth, He will remain incorruptible & He cannot lie <PSALM 117:2; 1 SAMUEL 15:29>
✨ God is holy.
He is apart from All moral defilement (anything foul, dirty, unclean - All sins) & He is hostile toward it (hostile - ready to attack or confront). God sees all evil and it angers Him. God hates sin <PROVERBS 8:13; 6:16-19; ISAIAH 59:2; PSALM 11:5>
✨God is referred to as an all consuming fire <ISAIAH 6:3; HABAKKUK 1:13; EXODUS 3:2,4-5; HEBREWS 12:29>
✨God is gracious.
His grace includes His goodness, kindness, mercy, & love. If it were not for God’s grace, His holiness would exclude us from His presence. Thankfully that is not the case because He desire to know each of us personally <EXODUS 34:6; PSALM 31:19; 1 PETER 1:3; JOHN 3:16; 17:3>
✨ God is infinite.
No human can fully answer this God-sized question, but through His Word we can understand much about who God is and what He is like. I pray that we wholeheartedly continue to seek after Him <JEREMIAH 29:13>
